Project: Soil and Groundwater Assessment and Remediation
Project Characteristics:
- Soil and Groundwater Assessment
- Risk Assessment
- Soil Remediation
- Regulatory Compliance
Project Detail:
Ensolum completed soil and groundwater assessment on a 133-acre tract of land proposed for single-family residential use. The land was formerly used for oil and gas exploration and production activity and included the historical use of mud circulation pits. Third-party contractors identified approximately 10,000 cubic yards of soil containing lead, arsenic, and barium concentrations greater than the Tier 1 protective concentration levels (PCLs). Ensolum completed a risk assessment to develop Tier 2 site-specific PCLs for these constituents of concern (COCs). The extent of soil remediation required was reduced by approximately 90%. Confirmation samples were collected following excavation and removal of impacted soil to demonstrate successful cleanup to the Tier 1 or Tier 2 PCLs.
Groundwater assessment identified arsenic, lead, and chloride concentrations above the Tier 1 PCLs. Background assessment, statistical analysis, and/or molar concentration ratios were used to determine that the nature or source of the elevated COCs in groundwater was unrelated to anthropogenic activity. The Railroad Commission of Texas Voluntary Cleanup Program issued a Certificate of Completion, and no further action was required.
